With gas prices reaching the $4 per gallon mark, more and more drivers are reconsidering the SUV in favor of a smaller vehicle, a hybrid or even a motorcycle. Well, Vespa has some interesting facts for these people, and that’s why they started the Vespanomics website. Vespanomics promotes embracing motor scooters as an alternative form of transportation to reduce oil consumption, pollution and traffic congestion.

The Italians say that if Americans were to switch just 10% of their total mileage to scooters, they would consume 14 – 18 million gallons less fuel per day and carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 324 million pounds per day as well. On a personal level, they could also reduce fuel consumption by approximately 58%, carbon dioxide emissions by 80%, and significantly reduce traffic congestion.

If you went from 8 wheels in your garage to 6 wheels, you would save over $6,000 a year and your average fuel consumption can improve from 75 mpg to 48 mpg, which is on par with a Toyota Prius. But unlike the Prius, your scooter won’t get stuck in traffic. Switching just 33%of your total mileage to scooters could also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 183 million lbs per day.
