Yay or nay?

California Scooter Co. (CSC) announced back in 2013 that they will bring their 250cc adventure bike to North America. Well, that moment is just around the corner since U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved the RX3 as compliant with federal motor vehicle emissions requirements. The Cyclone RX3 – or as known in China, the Zongshen RX3 – will offer a pretty great package for your money.

The RX3 features a 249.6cc liquid-cooled 4-valve engine capable to deliver 24.8 hp at 9,000 rpm and 16.5 lb-ft (22.4 Nm) of torque at 7,000 rpm. The single-cylinder engine is water-cooled, fuel-injected and has an overhead cam. It is coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission. Frame is 2mm thick polygonal steel. You’ll find a 37mm inverted fork with 5.1 inches of travel at the front and preload adjustable monoshock with 5.6 inches of travel at the back. Brakes are twin-piston units with 262mm single disc at the front and 258mm at the back. Seat height is measured at 31.3 inches (795mm) which makes the bike suitable for a lot of riders. The bike tips the scales at 386 lbs with luggage, luggage rack, guards, and windshield. Fuel capacity is 4,2 gal and top speed of the CSC Cyclone RX3 is said to be 84 mph (135 km/h).

“The CSC Cyclone is an adventure touring bike that makes sense, and we believe its 250cc engine size is a perfect solution to real-world adventure touring needs,” said Steve Seidner, CSC president and chief executive officer. The company said the Cyclone is the only motorcycle of its type in the 250cc range.

The RX3 is “as good as or better than any other motorcycle on the market today, including expensive European imports that cost eight times as much as the Cyclone”, he added.

Major selling point is the price

Major selling point is the price

The major selling point of the bike will be its price tag. The $3,495 (€2,715) price makes the RX3 a pretty good deal since you only get 125cc scooters for this kind of money. According to the first reviews, maneuvering the RX3 is pretty easy and it’s got a great mileage, 70-75 mpg. Another important note is that the engine has low octane fuel requirements. The CSC Cyclone is manufactured to CSC specifications by Zongshen in China. Production has already began and the first bikes will be be on U.S. soil in late February. With the US EPA approval, the Cyclone can now be sold in all 50 states except California. California requires California Air Resources Board (CARB) approval but CARB approval of the CSC Cyclone is expected shortly.
