This custom BMW R100RT is not the fastest custom bike we’ve seen this year but in this case, speed is absolutely irrelevant because this bike looks just stunning. The Desert sled was built by a small custom garage in Cape Town, South Africa and the goal was to build something that’s very aesthetically driven. Well, Steven Pitt and his guys succeeded. Read the full article »

It seems that scramblers are truly back. After Triumph and Ducati, BMW also created its own (custom) scrambler that was revealed yesterday at the Wheels & Waves Festival in Biarritz, France. Based on the existing R nineT, the Path 22 is BMW Motorrad’s first-ever Scrambler. The bike is stripped down to the essentials, every element and surface has a function and it was designed for surfers in impressive 1950s style. Read the full article »

As part of its BMW Motorrad Innovation Day 2011, the Bavarian manufacturer introduced a new semiactive suspension control system called Dynamic Damping Control (DDC). As early as 1986, BMW Motorrad achieved a milestone in suspension technology by launching the Paralever swingarm, an innovation that considerably improved rear suspension and the transfer of forces. In 1993, the freshly launched opposed twin “boxer” engine series was the first to be fitted as standard with a front suspension system that operated independently of the rear known as Telelever. Read the full article »

It’s no surprise that the S1000 RR won the race with 9,72 sec. The F800R - which has only 87hp - rocketed to second place with 11,54 sec.
The Bavarian manufacturer unveiled a new motorcycle and car communication system that aims to prevent cars pulling across the path of oncoming bikes. The „Left Turn Assistant” is activated automatically in the BMW 5 Series test vehicle as soon as the car’s sensors detect that it is entering the left-turn lane and the car registers the driver’s wish to turn off. Recognition of the left-turn lane takes place on two levels. The vehicle positioning function of the navigation system allows the location of the car to be fixed to within a metre at intersections. Read the full article »

Never enough of car vs. bike videos. In this latest video we can see two of BMW’s finest machines, an M3 and an S1000 RR. Here's how the racing duel went - Rico and Nico are friends and they wanted to find out which one's faster: A BMW S 1000 RR or a BMW M3. The Bavarian manufacturer gave them the chance for a little extra tuning, put them on a racetrack and filmed the race. It sounds simple, but during the race it starts raining. Make your guesses and watch the video after the jump. Read the full article »

BMW Motorrad USA announced today that it will be the first motorcycle manufacturer to offer ABS as standard equipment on its entire range of 2012 model year motorcycles. A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety revealed that motorcycles equipped with antilock brakes are 37 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than models without ABS. BMW was the first motorcycle manufacturer to introduce ABS in 1988 and now offers a sixth generation and numerous ABS options across its product line. Read the full article »

According to MCN, BMW Motorrad has confirmed that the mass-production of the Concept C starts in 2012. The radical concept was designed to show the future of BMW motorcycles and was unveiled at last year’s Intermot in Cologne. BMW also confirmed that the production version of the bike will debut at this year’s EICMA show. The bike is powered by a powerful parallel twin wngine. And what about the production version? “Sadly we won’t have lasers fitted and however hard we’ve tried we can’t find anyone to make blue tyres.” says BMW Vice President of Design David Robb. Read the full article »

This time, Pfeiffer is explaining and performing a stopping. „The Stoppie, sometimes also called a front wheelie is a motorcycle trick that does not only look extremely cool -- it's also quite hard to perform. But who better to explain how to do it right than the four times World Champion Stunt Rider Chris Pfeiffer?” warns BMW. “A stoppie is pretty dangerous and not easy to learn.” adds Pfeiffer. Read the full article »

Spanish motorcycle magazine Solomoto was able to take a photo of BMW’s new-generation R1200 GS Adventure. The magazine claims that the new GS will feature a brand new, liquid-cooled boxer engine. Although the spy shots are poor quality, what matters is not the quality, but the news. The R1200 GS’s new engine externally looks the same, but the first thing you notice is that the final drive and shaft drive are located on the left hand side of the bike, totally backwards from the current R1200GS. Read the full article »

Six bikes made in excess of $100,000, among them a very rare, factory prepared competition 1939 BMW R 51 RS, which made $130,200 after competitive bidding from US collectors.
The American arm of BMW announced a 4% sales growth for 2010. The Bavarian manufacturer sold 98 000 bikes globally in 2010 compared to the 87 000 units it sold in 2009, that’s a 12% increase. The best selling bike of the marque was the R1200 GS (18 700 units), and was followed by the R1200 GS Adventure ( 11 600 units), the R1200 RT (11 100 units), and the S1000 RR supersport machine (10 200 units). More interestingly, the S1000 RR outsold the R1200 GS in the US. Read the full article »

Husqvarna unveiled the Mille 3 Concept at the 2010 EICMA show, which, according to Visordown, was the first sign that the Swedish company is planning road bikes. The British magazine reports that the manufacturer will launch the first of a whole range of road bikes in late 2011 as part of a new strategic plan. The first road machine of Husqvarna will use a 900cc parallel twin engine based on the BMW F800 models. Husqvarna could use the experience and resources of their parent company, BMW. Read the full article »

When BMW introduced the S1000 RR back in 2009, rumours suggested that there will be a naked version. But then the manufacturer shattered these rumours, so small tuners have to do the job. So did the California-based Evoluzione Cyclesports. The naked version is equipped with raised streetfighter handlebars and integrated mirrors. The US tuner that sells tuning parts for Aprilia, Benelli, Bimota, BMW, Ducati and KTM, kept the asymmetrical headlight but removed most of the plastic. Read the full article »

Recent years have seen radical changes in the world of individual mobility, specifically in the conurbations, and the number of registrations has rocketed for virtually all individual transport concepts. However, the space available to traffic has not grown to the same extent, so individual mobility must come to terms with the new circumstances. Against this background, BMW Motorrad will be expanding its present motorcycle adventure world to include the big scooter. This new product segment will first give rise to two innovative premium scooters with internal combustion engines. Read the full article »

Ahead of EICMA, BMW released information on the 2011 R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic naked machines. Generating perceptibly higher torques, the new boxer engine provides an extra boost to temperament. Derived from the BMW HP2 Sport, their new boxer with 1170 cc and DOHC valve gear corresponds to the engines already installed in the BMW R 1200 GS and BMW R 1200 RT. The basic R 1200 R has a sporty character with new cast light alloy wheels, the R 1200 R Classic presents wire spoke wheels for a deliberate touch of refined nostalgia. Read the full article »

Last month they performed their annual independent performance testing on four potential Police bikes: the BMW R1200RTP, Kawasaki Concours 14 Police, Harley-Davidson Road King and Electra Glide. The test included acceleration, braking times and lap speeds around a course.
Ever since BMW Motorrad presented the concept study Concept 6 in autumn 2009, the new 6-cylinder in-line engine installed in it has caught the imagination of many motorcycle fans. For over seven decades now, 6-cylinder in-line engines have stood for fascinating engine technology in automobiles at BMW more than with any other brand. With the new K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL, BMW motorcycles are now available for the first time with a 6-cylinder in-line power unit developed in-house. The two touring motorcycles have a supreme, impressive and equally distinctive appearance, creating a desire to travel at first sight. Read the full article »

The new motorcycle, depicted here in a couple of official sketches, is set to form part of Smart’s upcoming show spread. It’s currently uncertain when the scooter goes into production but knowing that Daimler plans to significantly broaden the Smart lineup we would say the fans of electric scooters don’t have to wait more than two years. Read the full article »

After announcing increased sales in the second quarter of 2010, the motorcycle division of BMW reported additional positivity for July. The sales of the German manufacturer rose 4.4% to 10,022 over 500cc, a segment that’s been on the negative side of sales across all manufacturers lately. BMW sold 9604 motorcycles in July 2009 in this segment. In the January-July period, BMW sold more than 67 000 motorcycles (previous year: 56 578). The best-selling model is – no surprise – the long-distance enduro, the R1200 GS, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Read the full article »

The Olympics isn't a meaningful event for motorcyclists, but this can change pretty fast thanks to a new agreement and sponsorship announcement. None other than the BMW Group will be the Official Mobility Partner of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) from now through 2016.
