Alex Earle is the Design Program Manager for Volkswagen America. But he is just as passionate about bikes as well as cars and the result of this passion is a beautiful street tracker. The custom bike is based on the Ducati Monster but it\u2019s lighter, faster and more beautiful. The basic bike can be set up in two distinct versions.\u00a0 In addition to the basic 19\u201d wheeled tracker, a quick change to 17\u201d, 3 spoke wheels and handlebars with reduced pull back create\u00a0 a 1982 Superbike styled road course bike with a much lower stand over height.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The goal was to create a lightweight, modern-day tracker with the latest technology, reasonable performance and distinctive looks. Looking at the pictures, Alex succeeded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the perfect convergence of my personal interests,\u201d says Alex. \u201cExcellent Ducati drivetrain, oversized wheels shod with aggressive rubber, tall seat height, and pure flat track proportion and graphics.\u201d<\/p>\n

First, he built a prototype using a 1:5 scale model, then 3D scanned it \u2013 this is the same protyoping process that could be found in the car industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe beauty of working in Los Angeles is that there\u2019s a small but fanatical group of fabricators who can realize just about anything you can dream up,\u201d he says. \u201cGuys have 3D scanners, big 5-axis mills and 3D printers. And most importantly, a deep well of experience with carbon, engineering, engines and exhaust dynamics.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the key goals was to reduce weight. He used as much carbon fibre as possible and the result is a dry weight of 157 kg (345 lb).<\/p>\n

The engine is Ducati\u2019s air-cooled, 900cc unit from the late nineties, coupled with a custom exhaust. Other features include a waterproof seat, LED headlamps, Brembo radial brake and clutch levers, K&N air filters (airbox eliminated), and carbon fiber number plate with integrated LED headlamp.<\/p>\n
